Great for property borders, privacy screens, wildlife habitat(turkey, pheasant, etc.) love it. Deer love to hide in it. Excellent biofuel and it is beautiful to look at.
This grass has greater photosynthetic efficiency and lower water use requirements than other kinds of plants. It has very low nutritional requirements - it has high nitrogen use efficiency and therefore is capable of growing well on barren land without the aid of heavy fertilization. It is a sterile hybrid and therefore propagates vegetatively underground through its rhizomes. Additional researched benefits include its ability to sequester carbon into the earth.
Miscanthus Rhizome/Root vary in size from the diameter of a pencil and only 1.5 inches long to 1 inch in diameter and 6-8 inches long. They all grow the same but the bigger the root the more it will grow multiple "baby roots" which will become a plant in itself.
How to plant miscanthus giganteus grass
Plant in Late Spring when the ground has warmed up.
If planting as a privacy screen/border:
Dig a trench approx. 12 inches wide and approx. 4 to 6 inches deep.
Lay the root horizontally with and buds up or the fine root hairs pointing downward.
Place them in the trench alternating from side to side approx. 6 to 12 inches apart.
Cover with soil and water but don’t soak unless you have very sandy soil.
If planting for a wildlife habitat (square plot):
Same steps as above except for laying the roots in a square pattern, 6 to 12 inches apart.
As the grass matures over the years, each root clump will grow thicker and wider.
